2018 - Ali McDonough '08

An athlete and member of the National Honors Society and National Art Honor Society, Ali McDonough ’08 was only a junior at Ursuline, when her younger brother Andrew, a freshman at Salesianum, was diagnosed with leukemia. He passed away following a brave 167-day battle with childhood cancer. Andrew’s blood type was B+ and this immediately became their family’s motto – to “Be Positive” as Andrew fought cancer. After his passing, Ali and her parents started The Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation, the largest provider of financial assistance to families of kids with cancer in the entire United States. Ali continues to help grow The B+ Foundation as Director of Social Media, Co-Chair of UDance, and on the Board of Directors, all while continuing her education.

Ali earned a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Delaware, a Master’s degree from Widener University, and on May 18th, Ali will receive her doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology from Widener University. In conjunction with her studies, Ali held positions in a men’s prison in North Philadelphia, the New Castle County Detention Center, and a residential substance abuse treatment center in Chester, PA to name just a few. She is currently with the State of Delaware’s Division of Prevention and Behavioral Health Services conducting psychological evaluations of Delaware youth in child protective services or juvenile probation.

Ali has been recognized by NASCAR as one of 4 National Finalists for the Betty Jane France Humanitarian of the Year Award. Additionally, Ali has been recognized with the Governor’s Award for Public Service from Governor Jack Markell, the Jefferson Awards for Public Service, the Tom Maloney Award from the Delaware Gridiron Club, and the Community Quarterback Award from the Philadelphia Eagles. Congratulations Ali, for all your hard work, just 10 years out of high school. We know you will continue to make your Ursuline sisters proud.
